About Joy & Gus:
Dr. Joy Adams is a genre-blending cellist, banjoist, and vocalist known for her dynamic role in the all-female acoustic powerhouse, Big Richard. With a background in classical performance and a doctorate from the University of Miami, Joy has shared stages with legends like Bruce Hornsby and Bobby McFerrin and contributed to soundtracks for Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit and Godless. Raised on a farm in Washington, she now channels her roots and range into boundary-pushing performances that fuse bluegrass, folk, and old-time traditions. With Big Richard, she brings the cello front and center—alongside the occasional clawhammer banjo.
Gus Tritsch is a powerful contemporary old-time fiddler& multi-instrumentalist who blends old-time string band music with modern rock and roll. The instruments he plays include fiddle, guitar and the banjouke, which looks like a banjo but is played like a ukulele.
He is a member of the award winning Appalachian string band The Wild Shoats. Originally from Millheim, Pennsylvania, he began taking fiddle lessons at age four with Judy Hyman of The Horse Flies. He wrote the popular modern fiddle tune "The Shoemaker," which has become a contemporary standard in the old-time and bluegrass community.
Known by the nickname "Leadfoot," he has toured internationally and nationally with Afro-futurist roots musician Jake Blount (including an appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series) and has performed with artists like Marah and Joy Adams.
